I chatted to Reuben Adams for a podcast recently. He asked me a bunch of things and I probably talked for too long. But the thing he seemed to pick up on most was our discussion of intelligence. To him humans are the most intelligent species on the planet. I argued otherwise. Intelligence is not measured by how well we can solve logical problems, reason about hypothetical situations or pass SAT exams. Intelligence is also not something you can "solve". Intelligence is a solution created by natural evolution to the myriad problems of survival and reproduction. It takes many forms: the hidden intelligence of a tree as it communicates with its neighbours and symbionts - referred to by some as the Wood Wide Web. The intelligence of biological development as organisms change their morphologies to suit their environments. The intelligence of immune systems as they correctly respond to pathogens that have never existed before. Human intelligence in contrast seems so puny. So limited. And so ego-centric. Destroy the planet so we can have more time to eat unhealthily and corrupt our brains through hours of viewing adictive AI-generated slop? Yes please! Humans may have a larger than average lump of white meat inside their skulls but they are the most stupid creatures around... You can listen to it all here: |
